Many applications have been posted late. 21 September 2009

The news that thousands of students face delays in getting their loans could hit those from disadvantaged backgrounds hardest, it has been asserted.

According to the Brightside Trust chief executive officer Dr Tessa Stone, the backlog of applications will harm the finances of some more than others.

She said those who cannot rely on their family for financial support will struggle without their student loan as they have nothing to fall back on.

"Disadvantaged or non-traditional students [may] find themselves falling at the first hurdle because of an organisational problem from the Student Loans Company (SLC)," Dr Stone predicted.

Her comments come after it was revealed around 170,000 students are still waiting on a reply after sending a loan application to the SLC.

The body has since apologised for the delay and promised to process the paperwork as quickly as possible.

It revealed that hundreds of applications are still arriving late every day and said this has contributed to the hold up.
