Repossession advice offered on government website
02 September 2009
The government has launched a website designed to help homeowners who are in danger of having their property repossessed.
Set up by the Ministry of Justice, the multimedia site offers a series of videos and written articles which explain the legal procedure as well as avenues to seek advice from.
It is a move that has been welcomed by Chris Jenkins, co-owner of the Homeowners Advice Centre.
He said: "I believe that the government''s new site is a positive step in bringing advice to people in an easily accessible format.
"In addition, a concerted effort should be made to stress to people the importance of taking action and not burying their head in the sand and hoping things will go away."
The expert also asserted that rising unemployment means that more people could be set to default on mortgage and rent payments.
According to data released by the Council of Mortgage Lenders, there were 11,400 repossessions in the second quarter of 2009, which is 14 per cent higher than the same period last year.
