Less people being disconnected due to debt 28 August 2009

The amount of British residents who saw their gas supply curtailed due to debt fell by 48 per cent in 2008.

According to a survey released yesterday (August 27th) by Ofgem, disconnections were down for gas, while those for electricity represented a nine per cent rise.

Overall, the amount of debt owed by British energy consumers remained stable in 2008 compared to the previous year, despite the impact of the global recession.

Maxine Frerk, director of governance, consumer and social affairs for the industry regulator, said: "The fall in total disconnections and reducing numbers in debt is encouraging and shows our previous guidance has had benefits.

"However, in these tough economic times it is more important than ever that energy suppliers do all they can to help customers who are struggling to pay their bills."
