Survival package ''urgent'' for familes in recession
27 August 2009
The chief executive of Child Poverty Action Group has spoken about the urgent need for help for families who are out of work and attempting to support children.
Calling on the government to take action on the problem, the children''s charity head said: "We know the harm done to the wellbeing of children when there''s no longer enough money coming into the house to keep up with basic essentials. It not only harms children today but has social and economic costs for us all in the long term.
"A recession survival package for struggling families is now the most urgent need in our national response to the ongoing economic crisis."
Chancellor Alistair Darling''s pre-budget report this autumn was highlighted as the time for a government response.
Comments from the group came after recent statistics from the Office for National Statistics revealed that 170,000 more children in Britain are living in unemployed households now than 12 months ago.
