BCC: More redundancies to come 10 August 2009

British workers face the prospect of further job losses after new data revealed that 50 per cent of firms are considering redundancies.

That is according to the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC), which revealed the results of a survey of 450 companies across Britain.

The data also showed that, of the respondents, not one firm is planning to increase stock holdings during the third quarter of 2009.

Director of policy at the BCC Adam Marshall believes that the government must look at ways to help business.

He said: "With half of firms still thinking about cutting their workforce by the end of the year, the government must continue to promote measures that stimulate growth in investment and jobs.

"It will be business that drives an economic recovery, boosting employment along the way. Policies to help businesses retain jobs and increase employment will be critical over the next 12 months. Scrapping plans to raise National Insurance contributions in 2011 is an obvious place to start."
